The topic of sustainability is becoming more and more important in all areas of public life. For several years now, the financial sector has also been working intensively on climate risks and sustainable financing. On the one hand, various initiatives at national and European level have driven the development of standards. In addition, the BAFin published a draft for a leaflet on dealing with sustainability risks in September. We want to analyze the contents of the leaflet with you and discuss the effects on risk management in your home.
The new leaflet of BaFin on dealing with sustainability risks:
• Inclusion of sustainability risks in the CRR / CRD framework and other international regulatory initiatives on green finance & ESG risks
• Inclusion of sustainability risks in risk inventory and stress testing and integration of ESG risks into the current risk type terminology
• Management of "climate-related risks" and "transition risks" via the tools of concentration risk management (including target portfolio, special analyzes and exit measures)
• Integration of sustainability risks in banks' risk management (status quo)
• Integration of sustainability risks into the EU banking supervision (status quo)
• Opportunities to Improve the Management of Environmental, Social and Governance Risks through the Code of Conduct, Risk Culture, Outsourcing, and other, more traditional, bank management tools
