In recent years, environmental, social and governance (ESG) investments have rapidly grown in popularity, establishing themselves as the preferred path to alternative investing. However, while there are plenty of social factors driving this trend, effective ESG investing is easier said than done.
There is currently no standardized framework for measuring ESG factors or validating ‘green’ credentials, making it difficult to draw truly insightful comparisons across companies and industries. The lack of consistent quality and transparency in ESG data poses a major obstacle to the pursuit of sustainable investing and needs to be addressed on a global scale. A further challenge for asset managers, banks and insurance companies is the need to keep pace with a wave of incoming ESG regulations and guidelines.
