Concerns about a global economic slowdown contributed to significant declines in public equities in 2022. Geopolitical uncertainties added to the unease, while increases in interest rates by central banks to control inflation eroded returns on some financial instruments, such as bonds and loans.
By contrast, private markets performed slightly better. Some equity valuations experienced less severe declines and private credit actually benefited from higher yields on floating-rate loans. Volatility and uncertainty are constraining access to debt and equity capital, resulting in a more conservative outlook. Can private markets outperform public markets over the long term? What are the risks and opportunities to be found?
