Dr. Carmen Theresa Ramos-Irizarry is a Board-Certified Pediatric Surgeon at KIDZ Medical Services in South Florida. Dr. Ramos’ certification comes from the American Board of Surgery, and she holds a certificate in Pediatric Surgery, providing surgical care for children from newborns to 18 years old. Currently, she is an associate examiner for the certifying exam of the American Board of Surgery. Her clinical interests include trauma care, and she is an Advanced Trauma Life Support instructor.

Proudly hailing from Ponce, Puerto Rico, Dr. Ramos-Irizarry earned her MD at the University of Puerto Rico School of Medicine. She completed her general surgery training in a combined program at the University of Puerto Rico and Harvard University in 1994. She also spent three years at the University of New Mexico as a research fellow and instructor in surgery. In 1999, Dr. Ramos-Irizarry completed her formal pediatric surgery training at the prestigious Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto, Canada. She received a master’s in public health from the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health and a master’s in clinical investigation at the University of Puerto Rico. Now, she focuses her practice on pediatric general surgery, and she is passionate about researching the health disparities of pediatric surgical care and injuries, trauma systems, and systems thinking.

Dr. Ramos-Irizarry joined KIDZ Medical Services and the NCH Healthcare System in Naples in 2017. Previously, she worked for prominent institutions such as Columbia University and New York-Presbyterian/Weill Cornell Medical Centers in New York City, Children’s Hospital at Montefiore in the Bronx, and Nicklaus Children’s Hospital (fka Miami Children’s Hospital) in Miami. She served in the U.S. Army Reserves as a lieutenant colonel during Operation Enduring Freedom in 2001 and worked at Landstuhl Regional Medical Center in Germany in 2003.

KIDZ Medical Services (KIDZ) is proud to announce that Dr. Ramos-Irizarry was selected as one of eight new councilors in the American Board of Surgery (ABS) Council on July 1. She will serve a six-year term on the council, and her selection earned her an honored spot in the ABS Continuous Certification Program. In addition to her new role as a councilor at the ABS, Dr. Ramos-Irizarry will serve on the Diplomates and Surgeons in Practice Committee and as a director of the Pediatric Surgery Board. She was also recently awarded with a prestigious membership to the Delta Omega Alpha Honor Society in Public Health at Johns Hopkins University, as well as named Top Doctor in 2019 by Naples Illustrated. She holds multiple memberships and fellowships in the following institutions: the Board of Directors of the Safe and Healthy Children’s Coalition of Collier County, Florida, the American Association of Public Health, the Florida Association of Public Health, the Eastern Association for the Surgery of Trauma (EAST), the American Pediatric Surgery Association (APSA), and the Surgical Section of the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP). She is a proud editorial reviewer for the Journal Injury Epidemiology, the Journal of the American Academy of Physician Assistants, the Journal of Pediatric Surgery case reports, and the American Journal of Surgery. She is also a NHLAP Cohort 8-member of the Center for Health Leadership and Practice at the CDC/Public Health Institute. She is a member of the American Academy of Pediatrics, American Public Health Association, American Pediatric Surgical Association, NCH Safe & Healthy Children’s Coalition of Collier County (board of directors), and Eastern Association for the Surgery of Trauma.
