Because of the more infectious Delta variant and the intermingling of unmasked individuals where vaccination status is unknown we are seeing a surge in cases. The Delta variant is spreading rapidly. Vaccinated people infected with the Delta variant might be contagious, the CDC says in justifying its new mask mandate. The mandate requires everyone, regardless of vaccination status, to wear masks indoors in public places as a precautionary measure even for those who are fully vaccinated. The CDC says this will also ensure an easy way to verify that all unvaccinated people are masked in the prescribed settings.
