Typically, these take several months to process because you have to do a background, you have to do a legal publication. You need to get your fingerprints done. You have to pay filing fees and without the assistance of a lawyer there, it can be even more cumbersome so we're ecstatic to be able to volunteer here today to do that project.

Name changes, fingerprints, filing fees - for the transgender community, transitioning can be tedious
"It's such a little thing that a lot of people take for granted, but it's very important in the transgender community." That's Tracy, although not officially. Tracy is transitioning from a male to a female and is in the process of changing her identity on paper to fit that new transition. And the process is extensive. It involves a background check, a legal publication, a fingerprint log and plenty of filing fees. The process can be cumbersome, which is why attornies are extending their help to assist individuals transitioning.
