Bronstein is a founding member of the Binghamton University Department of Social Work and currently serves as dean of the College of Community and Public Affairs and as director of the Institute for Justice and Well-Being. Laura’s research revolves around interdisciplinary and interprofessional collaboration, as well as community schools.

She created the Index of Interdisciplinary Collaboration and co-edited the book, A Guide for Interprofessional Collaboration (Council on Social Work Education Press, 2018). She also co-authored School-Linked Services: Promoting Equity for Children, Families and Communities (Columbia University Press, 2016). She currently leads Binghamton University Community Schools (BUCS) serving to develop, implement and evaluate university-assisted community schools locally and nationally.

  • "When summer programs are components of community schools, they assure students from low-income families have the necessary support to continue learning through the summers," says Bronstein. "This occurs through enriched activities including music, dance, crafts, athletics, outdoor experiences, and academics. With students more plugged into summer learning, teachers in high-poverty neighborhoods can begin teaching new content at the start of the school year, without spending valuable time backtracking over content forgotten from the prior year."

  • Community schools pursue a unique learning model whereby they supplement classroom-based instruction with out-of-school (before school, after school and summer) learning. They provide support to students whose families do not have access to academic support beyond the classroom. Their support is not limited to the school term, but continues all through the year.
