Philipp is the Regional Director of the Lion Program (West and Central Africa) at Panthera. His mission in life is to help protect and recover the last populations of wild cats across West and Central Africa, in close partnership with local governments, communities, and numerous other partners. What gives Philipp constant hope is witnessing the spectacular population recoveries lions and leopards have made in recent years at some of Panthera's field sites in Gabon and Senegal. He strongly believes that, working together, we can recover and stabilize the populations of big cats across this region, not to the detriment, but to the benefit of local communities.
Other countries are exploring this as an option as well, but it’s not really written into the wildlife monitoring protocols like [it is] in Gabon. It’s really becoming an integral part of the government’s strategy to monitor and better protect wildlife.
