When considering the prospect of bans on short-haul flights, it is important to consider the availability of suitable alternative modes of transport. The French ban originally proposed a ban on all flight routes that were covered by a train journey of less than three hours. This was subsequently reduced to two hours. Only two domestic flight routes in the UK can currently be covered by train in under three hours.
More progress is needed for the UK to reach net zero, but banning domestic flights isn’t likely to feature in its plan to get there.
