Travis’ career has focused on understanding how to harness the diversity of the earth’s natural systems to enable a more sustainable world. His approach to discovery combines a deep knowledge of molecular biology, biochemistry, and biophysics with an innately creative spirit. In 2015, he was honored as the United Kingdom’s ​‘Innovator of the Year’ by the Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council. He has authored and invented more than 50 research publications and patents, and spent five years at Imperial College London and University of Oxford as a lecturer and associate professor, respectively.

Travis co-founded Sound Agriculture in 2013 to identify science-based solutions to today’s complex agricultural challenges. He received a PhD in biochemistry and biophysics from Caltech, and a B.S. in molecular biology from University of Texas at Austin.

  • We believe growers need new tools to not only help them adapt to the changing environment, but to consumer and regulatory preferences as well. Our goal is to develop reliable, effective tools that increase production, improve food quality, and reduce waste. From the science side, we also saw an opportunity to take what we’ve learned about how plants and microbes interact in the soil and how that drives a lot of agronomic factors. Our understanding in this area has really increased in the past 10 to 20 years, and we wanted to get it out of the lab and into the field.
