The Conference, now in its tenth year, will address key tax issues for a wide range of in-house and outside tax and finance personnel doing business in the U.S. and Latin America. Case studies will underscore the effect of treaties, court decisions and domestic laws to provide insight into local planning opportunities. Panels will feature industry speakers, leading practitioners and government representatives offering the latest perspectives from the U.S. and Latin America on such topics as cross-border M&A, cash repatriation, taxation of renewable energy and infrastructure projects, the cloud economy, the prospect of tax reform in the United States, and more.
The Workshop will focus on U.S. estate and basic income tax issues, including but not limited to a panel discussion that covers residency rules, U.S. tax planning for short term and temporary residency in the U.S., tax impacts of investment alternatives, pre-immigration tax planning, and how to plan for the impact of U.S. tax and reporting rules.
A second panel of wealth planning experts will discuss strategic planning for Latin American families with operating businesses. Topics include how to structure/change non-U.S. structures to accommodate gifting to trusts when they are not well recognized, dealing with local tax/succession rules, changing forms of company to those that are pass-through or can be checked; use of usufruct arrangements, foundations.
The Workshop, cosponsored by the Tax Executives Institute, will feature high level in-house tax professionals from multinational corporations who will discuss (1) the main challenges for companies in Latin America in establishing and managing electronic tax compliance, audits and litigation in the region, (2) best practices for managing in-house tax talent in Latin America, including the skill set required and demands of the in-house tax job in times of economic crisis, and (3) how to best manage a tax dispute in an electronic environment, from the collection and use of data, answering IDRs, the audit/inspection through the assessment and judicial disputes including the managing external tax counsel/consultants.
