In these extraordinary times, there are many new challenges in designing, constructing, and operating health care facilities that are, according to the U.S. Energy Information Administration, the second most energy-intensive facility type across the nation.

One of the biggest challenges is how to utilize energy sources that are able to support all the energy needs of these complex building types, while simultaneously employing processes that are the most efficient and cost effective with the least amount of environmental impact.

It is broadly recognized that health care facilities, operating 24/7 to provide intense surgical treatment and medical care, are also some of the largest producers of pollutants, accounting for 5% to 10% of the nation’s Green House Gas (GHG) emissions. National organizations, including the American Society of Healthcare Engineering (ASHE), the American Institute of Architects (AIA), the American Medical Association (AMA), and The Association of American Medical Colleges, (AAMC) are all actively promoting the use of emerging energy models that support health care facilities, conserve energy, and lessen environmental impact.

By exploring and employing these new technologies and conservation methods, design, construction, and health care facility professionals can further reduce GHG emissions from health care facilities, reduce energy costs, make a positive impact on our nation’s future, and embrace the idea of Primum non nocere, (First, do no harm).

During the event, nationally recognized speakers will address these energy issues and provide the attendees with an expanded tool kit to engage and solve these challenges.

In addition, there will be detailed training in the latest codes and standards applied and enforced in Florida for hospitals, nursing homes, ambulatory surgical centers, and other health care facility types.
