• India is one of the fastest-growing construction markets globally, with growth primarily fueled by infrastructure development in sectors such as roads and bridges, railways, tunnels, airports, urban rail and water. In the past few years, these sectors have seen substantial project execution, resulting in significant capacity expansion and upgradation.
• National highway (NH) construction has witnessed remarkable progress, doubling from 12 km per day in 2014 to 28 km per day in 2023. At present, India’s total NH network spans over 146,000 km and the government aims to extend this to around 185,000 km by 2030.
• In the railways sector, track construction of 5,300 km was achieved during 2023-24, surpassing the 5,241 km achieved during 2022-23. Indian Railways is now targeting to add 5,500 km of tracks every year, along with replacing 7,000 km of old tracks every year.
• Airport infrastructure has also grown significantly. The country currently has 157 aerodomes (including heliports and water aerodromes). In the past two years, airports namely, Mopa in Goa, Ayodhya in Uttar Pradesh and Terminal 2 in Bangalore, have been operationalised. Further, mega greenfield airports in Noida and Navi Mumbai are likely to commence first phase of operations in early 2025.
• In the ports sector, over 550 projects valued at approximately Rs 4 trillion are currently in the development or implementation phase under the flagship Sagarmala Programme.
• Other sectors such as tunnels, urban rail and water have also seen increased construction activity over the years. Currently, more than 1,600 tunnels spanning close to 3,000 km are at various stages of development. In the urban rail sector, over 980 km of the metro rail and regional rapid transit system (RRTS) network is operational while more than 1,000 km is under construction. Meanwhile, in the water segment, efforts are underway to provide piped water supply to all households by 2025, for this massive infrastructure upgradation is taking place.
• Going forward, the government is planning investments to the tune of Rs 143 trillion for infrastructure development by 2030. This will open up major opportunities for construction sector.
• The sector is also expected to witness the emergence and a higher uptake of efficient and cost-effective construction techniques, innovative materials and advanced digital technologies.
The mission of this conference is to discuss the emerging trends in construction; highlight the upcoming construction opportunities in the infrastructure sectors in India; identify new requirements in terms of design, material, equipment and technology; and understand the unresolved challenges, next steps and priority areas to implement faster and more efficient construction practices. It will also offer a platform for technology and equipment providers to showcase their solutions.
