We are in a period of limbo with the UK having left the EU but no clarity provided on issues such as the enforcement of foreign judgements. Perhaps UK solicitors are not allowed to fly in or fly out into certain European countries to visit their clients, or they need to register in advance. EU member States have committed to clarify certain areas of the legal world but have not yet done so.

We do not purport to find current solutions for all the areas we raise but we shall take you through areas of concern in our post-Brexit era. We shall consider the European Succession Regulation and cross border (UK/ Ireland, UK /Italy, UK/Spain, UK/Luxembourg) challenges or changes to trusts, inheritance tax and gift tax regimes, divorce, matrimonial regimes, and general legal practice. The Trade and Cooperation Agreement (TCA) might give you guidance for your UK EU concerns or it might be silent. We will therefore consider double tax treaties or other direct agreements between the EU country and the UK.

In the final session of the season we will endeavour to raise the “Brexit” issues which you need to address with your existing clients, your practice and your future clients or you simply need to look out for. The doom and gloom of pre-Brexit discussions has changed to acceptance. Opportunities await, the world is our oyster.
