In Europe, more than 180 cities operate urban rail transport (metrorail/ light rail/ tram/ suburban rail) systems spanning a total network of over 17,000 km and covering 26,000 stations/stops. Nearly 50 million passengers use these systems daily. The increasing complexity of infrastructure projects requires a holistic approach to ensure a high-quality solution.

Investments in asset management are imperative to maximise customer satisfaction, manage risks, minimise whole life costs, reduce maintenance costs, maintain high levels of safety, and enable delivery of outcomes and priorities.
For rail operators, an asset management strategy defines the long-term vision for key physical assets including rolling stock; tracks, bridges and tunnels; signalling, control and communication systems; heating, cooling, and ventilation equipment; power supply system; stations and facilities; lifts and escalators as well as parking infrastructure.
Within the asset management programme, the key areas include formulation of asset management policies, strategies and plans; assessment of whole life costs; data capture and analysis; asset management change programmes; audits and evaluation; as well as use of technology.
There is an increasing focus on predictive maintenance to minimise costs and service disruption; improve safety; and best utilise the available funding. The industry has developed various tools for operations data analysis and project planning. Organisations are realising the significance of cultural change and human resource development to gain the maximum benefits of asset management programmes.
