Despite economic headwinds in 2022, private capital markets in Australia continued to show strong growth. Industry AUM for Australia-focused funds reached a record $118bn as of September 2022, up 21% against December 2021. Growth was driven by record private equity and venture capital fundraising. Real estate remained the largest asset class, followed by private equity. Overall, the investor profile in Australia is becoming more diverse, with increased participation from high-net-worth individuals, family offices, wealth managers, and corporate investors. However, investors are expected to be more selective in deploying capital in 2023.
