There has recently been a rapid increase in the development of covered bonds in many countries in central and eastern Europe. Previously this cornerstone of the western European mortgage market has been under developed in most of the countries in the region. Drivers of this rapid growth include the need for CEE banks to reduce their reliance on foreign parental funding, the development of local currency capital markets, the inadequacy of deposit funding to match the growth in mortgage origination and, crucially, the introduction of a covered bond directive.
This CEE Covered Bond Briefing will take a practical approach to the key topics in this area for prospective issuers and jurisdictions including the realities of establishing a programme from scratch, the market appetite for CEE covered bonds and the resultant term and cost of funds that issuers can expect to achieve and the rapid growth in demand for green and sustainable covered bonds and whether this can open up new lines of funding for CEE borrowers.
