In the past CFO Days we discussed a number of parts of 'Leading in the Vuca world' in which we live. We offered solutions for volatility (Put your business in the fast lane), uncertainty (Accelerate Learning) and complexity (Embrace Entrepreneurship). This year we will discuss the part that will test your personal leadership the most: 'Leading through ambiguity'.
Control becomes more diffuse and complex in these times. Digitization is necessary to grow, because only the largest companies remain in their market. This requires centralization. On the other hand, more local autonomy is needed in order to be able to respond quickly to changes in the market.
Your shareholders are increasingly calling for more profit and higher share prices (such as Unilever and AkzoNobel). You must therefore make full use of less costs and more efficiency. On the other hand, the human factor is more important than ever. Because the innovation and creativity that your organization needs comes from your people. And they need freedom to develop themselves optimally.
Doing good for society is becoming increasingly important for (potential) customers and employees. In the long term this is totally compatible with achieving good (monetary) results. This is less often the case in the short term, where the bill is waiting for the media, analysts and shareholders.
The margin in which Finance is located is also increasing. More than ever, you are involved in the business, encourage innovation and entrepreneurship and make this possible. But due to the increased speed of doing business, a company goes downhill faster than ever before. At the same time, the risks to which your company is exposed also increase exponentially. You therefore have to dare to step on the brakes faster and harder than ever, especially within a boardroom where everyone wants to transform. And then there is also the regulator, media and public opinion who can not wait to get you to the pillory when things go wrong.
During CFO Day 2018 we will discuss the biggest contradictions in the current business world and within the Finance function. We discuss which leadership is needed to lead in an ambiguous world. You will be inspired by people who have led their ship through turbid water in difficult circumstances and will discuss their challenges with your peers: Leading through ambiguity.
