To coincide with the publication of his book Anthology: Past, Present and Future Principles of Banking and Finance, Professor Moorad Choudhry presents at this CISI Fellows Masterclass his views on what modern banking should represent for the foreseeable future.
Banks should, and must, meet the requirements of three equally important stakeholders: shareholders, customers and regulators. The sometimes competing interests of these stakeholders demands that a fit-for-purpose governance, culture and risk management framework be in place at every bank. With this, they can hope to demonstrate what good banking looks like.
Professor Choudhry discusses the value of combining a skill-based integrated approach to balance sheet management, what he terms “strategic asset-liability management”, with an approach to undertaking customer business that re-asserts societal well-being as its primary objective – together with a Board and ALCO composition that has a deep and genuine understanding of finance. Adopting this attitude to what banking represents should hopefully go some way to preventing large-scale banking failures in the future.
