Advanced engineering dates back to the Roman Empire. Growing cities needed drinking water and roads to connect their expanding empire. Water use per capita in ancient Rome was roughly the same as that of modern cities such as New York City and Rome. Many of the roads and viaducts built so long ago still stand, some still in use. The Romans developed engineering, in part, through trial and error. Their access to vast resources and labor helped them turn their engineering goals into reality.

This year’s theme, “Model-Based Systems Engineering: Optimizing Systems of Systems,” is a natural complement to last year’s focus on digital twins.
