This 2021 year’s edition will bring together experts from industry, policymakers, and supervisors to share their insights on key developments in digital finance, driven by regulatory initiatives and industry priorities.

Payments are at the heart of the financial industry and at the same time Central Bank Digital Currencies and the digital euro are raising important questions. We will delve into the evolution of the financial ecosystem, the phenomenon of CBDCs, and the aspiration for ‘homegrown’ pan-European payment solutions.

Session Overview
The third Digital Thursday 2021 will focus on Central Bank Digital Currencies and payments. The event will discuss the phenomenon of CDBC globally and debate on the need for CBDCs for a global financial ecosystem. Experts will explore how CBDC issuance would change the role of central banks and the banking system overall, while providing insights on different CBDC projects that are under way.

The event also touches on a potential integration of a digital euro into the European payments landscape: how does it fit together with the retail payments strategies of the European Commission and the ECB? And how does it affect the objective to develop ‘homegrown’ pan-European payment solutions and the new instant payments framework in Europe?
