Food and water security is at the sharp end of climate change. Long before rising sea levels cause mass migration, drought and famine are likely to do so. The food shortages and price inflation of 2022 are a warning to those who have been complacent about this issue for too long. Far greater attention – and money, both public and private – needs to be devoted to working out how the world can sustainably feed a fast-growing population in a fast-deteriorating climate. Over the course of the event, we will bring together senior representatives from governments, multilaterals, financiers, investors, issuers, corporates, regulators, service providers, and academics, to share ideas on how best to finance resilient and sustainable global food and water systems. A joint statement by the heads of the Food and Agricultural Organization, IMF, World Bank, World Food Programme and WTO highlighted the urgency of the crisis and called for short- and long-term actions. Part of the answer will be financial. Vast resources of global capital markets are largely cut off from the food and agriculture sector, since enterprises in the industry form only a small part of major equity and bond indices. Market participants will need to find ways to bridge this gulf, so money can flow to re-green landscapes and make agriculture resilient and innovative.
