Asia is home to some of the world’s largest carbon emitters, accounting for 52% of global carbon emissions in 2020. It is also one of the most vulnerable regions to the impacts of climate change. However, Asia’s leading technology sector and an infrastructure network which is not yet fully developed offers unique opportunities for issuers and investors to make a real environmental impact while optimising the use of their funding and investment tools.
Transition finance is a key tool in the battle to decarbonise the world, it is important that existing polluters are incentivised and aided to transform their practices. This investment allows the short term costs of the transition to be alleviated and companies to instead focus on the long term growth and environmental benefits. Transition finance does face challenges in Asia, fragmented approaches from country to country, and a lack of standardised reporting frameworks are deterring some investors from committing. Overcoming these issues will not be simple; however, by appropriating the West’s existing frameworks and tailoring to the needs of the Asian market, it is possible to alleviate investors' concerns.
Financial Times Live, in partnership with the Japan Securities Dealers Association, is delighted to host this online discussion examining the current state of transition financing and other initiatives to address sustainability issues in Asia, what is needed to attract more funding and how this type of investment can have a tangible positive impact.
