Issuance of sustainable debt is on an upward curve after a challenging 2022, with total green, social and sustainability bond issuance in 2023 just under $200b and more than 50% coming for government issuance. Green bonds from emerging markets are representing an opportunity for those countries where energy mixes are heavily dependent on fossil fuels, and the resurgence of firmer bond returns in 2023 add to this lift, with many issuers entering the sustainable debt investment market for the first time.
