While the gap is narrowing, the number of women in private equity remains disproportionately low: 30/40% of entry level hires across asset management firms are women, but at the senior level, this number drops to 10%. Corporate board representation also lags - in the US, for example , only 16% percent of board members are women, and the numbers are low as 2 - 4% in parts of the EU. At the same time, a study of Fortune - 500 companies found that, when ranked by the number of women on the board, top quartile companies' return on equity outperformed by 53%. Fidelity's 2016 study revealed that women investment managers not only perform as well but may in fact slightly outperform their male counterparts. Hence, gender diversity is not simply an issue of political correctness - rather it is arguably one of business necessity. What can be done to close the gap?
