This Event segment has grown apace in Asia, but it remains far less established than, for example, in Europe or the US, with an estimated 30% of assets managed by boutique firms in Switzerland against estimates of 5% to perhaps (very optimistically) 10% in Asia. The growth to date has therefore been from a low base, but it has been impressive, especially out of Singapore and Hong Kong in the past decade. However, set against the truly dramatic (and continuing) expansion of HNW and UHNW private wealth in the region, the IWM sector has much more potential, and there is plenty of room for growth from existing players and from new entrants. But what are the strategies, products, investment, technologies, talent and approaches required to seize the many opportunities ahead? The answer to these questions centre on the growth potential for the independent wealth sector. The Hubbis Digital Dialogue of March 3 will mine down the shafts of Asia’s wealth management market to discover exactly where the growth will come from in Asia, and therefore what strategies the incumbent independents and the new entrants will need to adopt to seize those opportunities.
The market is surely there, but the independents need to keep their eyes set firmly on the targets and chart a course for their businesses, their people and their clients that will see the independent sector emulate the great success of their peers in mature markets such as Switzerland. There is little doubt that the IWM community in Asia is in the right place at the right time as to market demand, but can they adopt the right model to win more market share of the rising AUM in the region? The established players have to a large extent been relying on their more conservative, perhaps older clients, but the world is changing, and the next generations are inheriting or building more of Asia’s vast private wealth, so the IWM sector needs to reach out to those actual or potential younger clients, delivering new products, services and approaches to appeal to them and to retain them as clients.
