In a world increasingly dealing with weather related risks as a result of the climate change, the insurance industry may play a significant role not only in covering financial losses and thus improve communities’ resilience, but also in helping public authorities and other interested bodies to better asses and manage risks.
Digital technologies – in particular IoT – have the potential to be a game changer for the insurers who have protected homes for years, increasing their relevance and presence in the customers’ lives by making possible the shift from financial support for recovery, to prevention of risk. To achieve such a goal, they “have to develop a smart home insurance strategy by becoming both customer-centric and insurtech.” The potential positive outcomes are numerous: customers are helped to avoid stressing home damages, insurers may achieve not only a better knowledge of their customers, but also better financial results; society as a whole may also benefit in terms of resilience and ecological management.
