Few people anticipated the effect that Donald Trump’s win in the United States presidential election would have on Japan. Since November 2016, stocks have ticked upwards, the yen has weakened and deflation concerns have been mitigated. Though the economy is performing decently, considerable challenges for Japan await.
A fragmented, post-Brexit Europe could fracture global trade and spell doom for Japan’s foreign interests. Shinzo Abe, the prime minister, must get to work. On the heels of a bilateral trade agreement with the European Union, his chief priority must be to push through a revised Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP)—albeit without American involvement. Troubled relations with China, North Korea and the United States will complicate matters, but Mr Abe has a strong track record in managing geopolitical tensions.
