We travelled 2,000 miles across the UK and hosted over 750 financial advisors in 10 locations for this year’s Joint Investment Forum. Our panel of leading fund managers outlined the core themes in their asset classes, as well as their top investment ideas for 2018.
Janus Henderson Investors Fixed Interest Monthly Income managers Nicholas Ware and John Pattullo warned of the perils of late-cycle behaviour, not least the emergence of crowded trades. In order to manage downside risk and deliver a consistent monthly income, they explained how the team blends income assets and why they ignore the index. Meanwhile, Newton Investment Management Multi-Asset Income manager Paul Flood discussed the challenges facing traditional sources of yield. In his opinion, alternatives offer a sustainable income with a low sensitivity to the economic cycle.
Human behaviour creates opportunities for value investors, according to Schroders’ Global Value managers Simon Adler and Kevin Murphy. They outlined the four key components of their process and warned investors not to overlook the potential for value stocks to thrive once more. Finally, Alex Araujo, manager of the M&G Investments Global Listed Infrastructure fund, explained how listed infrastructure can enhance returns and reduce volatility within a broader portfolio. He also explored the potential repercussions of rising interest rates for the asset class.
