This year's Mexico Summit will be focused on the outcome of the 2018 Mexican presidential elections, which will yield a new leader who will serve a six-year term, in addition to 500 new members of the Chamber of Deputies and 1228 members of the senate.
The event will examine the state of Mexican politics after what promises to be a fraught transition of power, with an emphasis on how the new president – largely predicted to be Andrés Manuel López Obrador – will assume the reins.
• What will become of the important energy reforms instituted by Enrique Peña Nieto?
• How will the new president handle the ever-sensitive NAFTA negotiations?
• What insights from Obrador’s tenure as mayor may be used to predict his policies as a future president?
• How will he (or Margarita Zavala, if she is elected as president) address Mexico’s evergreen challenges: inequality, unemployment, corruption, and harness the areas in which it is best-poised to thrive: manufacturing, fintech, entrepreneurship, higher-value exports, renewable energy, competitive healthcare R&D clusters? The Economist Events offers a truly global perspective on a country’s place in the world and its future outlook.
