The path to sustainable growth has not been easy, as the country’s rapid modernisation in the past century led to dramatic environmental, social and governance (ESG) challenges. But since then, Japan’s government has formulated strategies to promote critical ESG development — especially in healthcare, disaster risk reduction, energy efficiency, gender equality and air pollution. Truly integrating sustainability into Japan’s business and society, however, requires a holistic approach among policy-makers, companies, non-governmental organisations, financiers and multilateral agencies.
• How is Japan progressing in its action plan on climate change?
• How can boards and stakeholders help to boost women’s participation in their companies?
• What are the consequences for companies that fail to meet sustainability standards?
• How can innovation and technology accelerate Japan’s energy transition?
• What government policies can assist companies in Japan to shift towards net-zero decarbonisation?
• How vital has sustainable development been for Japan’s disaster-management efforts?
