Retail generated a record high $5.7 trillion sales in 2017, according to the U.S. Census Bureau, making another strong year with annual sales growth of 4.4% year-over-year. However, consumers also turned their dollars towards e-commerce, spending $453.46 billion online in 2017, a 16% increase from the previous year which represents 13% of total retail sales and nearly half of its growth.
But cities still saw thousands of stores close in 2017 and plenty of brick-and-mortar business scaled back their locations. E-commerce is forcing companies to rethink their business model in order to keep up with the internet's giants and consumer demands. The industry's feelings on the future of retail is mixed, but retailers see signs for hope as they look for ways to reinvigorate their marketplaces.
