The Code Conference is a technology conference.

What does that mean?

It means that in 2021, like every year we’ve produced Code — and its predecessor, the D Conference — we brought the leaders of the world’s most important technology companies onstage for frank conversations about the challenges and opportunities ahead of them. But technology stopped being a discrete industry a long time ago. Now technology is baked into everything so our conversations included people who don’t just run tech companies, but run companies grappling with technological change.

And while some tech leaders wish they could do their work without grappling with government, that’s certainly not the case, and it’s clearer now than ever.

So in 2021, we invited the people in charge of enforcing regulations, and those creating new ones.

We invited government officials leading the conversation around regulation, like Minisiter of Science and Technology. And we invited tech giants dealing with new questions about their role in technology and society, including CEO of Afrihost.

We also heard from a younger generation of tech companies — Rikatec, iMed Tech, Uber, maturing in a new regulatory environment and increasingly globalized world. Finally, we spoke about cryptocurrency, women in tech and media mega-mergers and 21st Century Fox.
