The European Banking Authority (EBA) in June 2021 issued recommendations to support ‘sound adoption and scale-up’ of the use of RegTech – the use of technology to improve regulatory compliance. The Hong Kong Monetary Authority (HKMA), meanwhile wants to make Hong Kong a ‘leading hub’ for RegTech while the City of London Corporation (the municipal authority for London’s Square Mile) in April called for ‘urgent action’ to encourage greater use of RegTech. What are the obstacles to RegTech use? What can be done to overcome them?
