In October of 2018 the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), the UN’s body for assessing science related to climate change, issued their Special Report “Global Warming of 1.5° C”, detailing the impacts of a 1.5° C rise in global mean temperature. It’s not pretty. Yes, our sector will be impacted, but so will most of the earth’s living systems and human populations, either directly or indirectly, and some catastrophically. It now appears that 3-4° C rise is more likely.
Despite rapid growth of digital infrastructure, over the last 10 years improvements in the energy efficiency of microprocessors was limiting the increase in power for data centers: in 2018, 1-2% of total global GHG emissions were attributed to power for data centers. However, we are now reaching the end of Moore’s Law, and internet traffic continues to explode, reaching over a zettabyte (1021 bytes) in 2017. Current estimates are that in 2030, 6-9% of global GHG emissions will be associated with data centers (and perhaps 18% from the entire ICT sector!).
Now, more than ever, we need to recognize leadership, and inspire progress. In 2019 iMasons launched the Sustainability Champion Award to recognize individuals who are moving the needle on digital infrastructure sustainability. We are now accepting nominations for the 2020 Award.
