In August 2020, the UK went without coal-fired power generation for its longest stretch since the industrial revolution. This lasted 55 days when the heat wave brought wind turbines to a standstill and caused gas-fired power stations to struggle. National Grid was forced to start-up a coal-fired power station in Nottingham to meet anticipated demand. The National Grid Electricity Systems Operator (ESO) has reported that by mid-decade the electricity system will be able to be supported entirely by zero-carbon sources, rather than having to keep fossil fuels on line to retain stability.
This conference provides an update on renewable energy investments from industry experts.
