The market for private debt is rather small and underdeveloped in Europe – it is, however, a market with high growth rates. The economy’s loan supply has stagnated since 2014 due to the banks; at the same time, companies’ debt increases. This capital gap is being filled increasingly by “non-banks”. The market share of insurers, pension funds and other investors in the credit volume is steadily growing. The political support of what is called disintermediation and the higher equity requirements on banks, based on Basel III, ensure that this share will continue to grow. There is a corresponding supply offered by investors, too. Especially due to continuously low interest rates, institutional investors are on the lookout for investment opportunities with predictable profits and manageable risks. Private debt investment in infrastructure and property as well as corporate finance are thus of great interest. They tempt you with attractive returns; at the same time the segment is characterised by low volatility, a weak correlation with other asset classes and good credit protection measures.
