2018 proved to be a volatile year in emerging markets (EM) investing. Many of the largest asset managers struggled to deliver consistent returns, as geopolitical risks and currency woes weighed on investor sentiment. This has caused some institutional investors to reconsider their overall allocation to EM with a heightened sense of urgency. But abandoning EM now would mean ignoring a strong track record of growth from this diversifying asset class. In fact, since early 2005, emerging economies have been the sole driver of Gross Domestic Product (GDP) growth globally. And recent troubles in select countries — like domestically generated credit and housing bubbles, debt overhang, or low level of foreign currency reserves — should not color investor sentiment for emerging markets as a whole.
