The NHS backlog maintenance bill has risen to over £9 billion, while the annual bill for running the NHS estate was totalled £9.7 billion in 2020, this is according to recently released figures from NHS Digital.
Having said this, the NHS Estate is at the centre of the Government’s plans for transforming the NHS and the largest hospital building plan in a generation was launched in 2019. It plans to deliver a long-term programme of investment in health infrastructure, with an investment of £2.8 billion for six large hospitals to be built by 2025. A further 21 schemes will be delivered between 2025 and 2030.
These plans will be supported by changes made to capital funding in April, NHS England and Improvement set out the changes with the key aim of providing:
• greater clarity and confidence on the level of capital resource available.
• support for system working and capital priorities discussions; and
• enabling faster access to national capital funding for critical safety issues.
As we enter a new year, this conference aims to provide key planning guidance and practical examples of best practice from across the NHS and commercial sector.
