Uncertainty was one of the dominant themes in the investment industry throughout 2022. Increased Fed activity which has led to rising interest rates, heightened geopolitical tension entangled with slower real economic growth, the wider market fallout from the slump in tech stocks and the collapse of FTX, and inflation at 8.5%, the highest rate since 1982.

Fully 65% of institutional allocators believe stagflation is a bigger risk than recession in 2023 (2023 Natixis Outlook Survey). The acronym that is being widely used to describe the current climate is VUCA-fest – volatility, uncertainty, complexity, and ambiguity.

Most allocators and asset owners will state that the macro environment does not impact their portfolio decision-making – at least in the short term. However, as a recent survey stated – ‘asset owners are reexamining traditional approaches to investing as they grapple with highly volatile markets, rising inflation, tightening monetary policy, ongoing disruptions from a global pandemic and increased awareness of social inequality.’

During our Winter Investment Roundtable, we will be examining, analyzing, and debating the question: How does the current macro environment impact an allocator’s investment decisions around their portfolio? In March, we will discuss which macro trends and events will impact allocators and their managers the most, how those impacts will manifest themselves in portfolio performance and risk factors, and how you can best mitigate these risks.
