Mid-Valley Media, which publishes the Corvallis Gazette-Times and the Albany Democrat Herald in the heart of Oregon’s beautiful Willamette Valley, seeks a sports reporter. If you love going beyond the “gamer,” telling stories that matter – the thing everyone is talking about around the water cooler – we'd like to hear from you.
Sports reporters cover all sorts of stories – features, analysis, trends, columns. We cover the local high school scene, which is very competitive, and we’re home to Oregon State University, a Division 1 school no matter in which conference it ends up after the Pac-12 shakeup.
As part of our ambitious staff, you'll hustle to get stories on our web and mobile platforms, while pursuing insightful, high-impact enterprise stories. The typical work week may include a weekend shift.
We'll consider both experienced and entry-level applicants, as long as you're dedicated to writing stories that connect with readers. You'll need an inquisitive mind, sharp writing skills and an appreciation for life in a college town with a smart, passionate reader base. Photo, video and social media skills are highly desired. The ideal candidate will:
Possess a degree in journalism or a related field or posies a combination of experience and education.
Demonstrate strong written and verbal communication skills
Have the ability to work a flexible schedule which includes nights, weekends and holidays
Demonstrate organizational skills and the ability to work within a team environment
Be able to report news via print and multimedia platforms
Proven experience in writing and reporting in a fast-paced environment and meeting deadlines
Previous experience working at a daily newspaper is a plus.
