Apartment Therapy is seeking an Editor, Lifestyle to join our Lifestyle team, which includes the Living, Real Estate, and Organizing and Cleaning verticals. The is a hybrid role based in the New York City area and will require a minimum of two days a week in our Soho office. The role will report to Apartment Therapy’s Executive Lifestyle Director and work in partnership with editors across the Lifestyle team to support the short- and long-term goals of the section, playing a crucial role in planning, executing, and growing our on-site coverage.
We're seeking a writer and editor who can multitask with aplomb. Applicants should have a clear passion for and ability to write and edit stories about general lifestyle topics (wellness, finance, career, entertaining, celebrations, travel and relationships), real estate (market trends, explainers, personal essays, and reported features, both viral and emerging), organizing and cleaning, SEO articles, product reviews, and recommendations. They also need to be able to understand traffic patterns, ideate on new story formats, and spot emerging and interesting themes centered around life at home. The ideal candidate is as comfortable writing up a reported and well-sourced trend explainer or personal essay as they are assigning out a quick-turn, sharp, and platform-friendly story on a viral lifestyle moment (girl math, anyone?). In an ever-changing digital environment, this editor needs to be nimble, flexible, and able to follow the (continuously) changing landscape that defines our coverage on a monthly basis.
This Editor will work on day-to-day content and larger brand-defining tentpole projects to distill tips, hacks, service, and trend coverage and advice to our readers in approachable, achievable ways. They will also play a pivotal role ideating and assigning across our larger coverage areas, including Real Estate and Living.
This is a hybrid editing and management role that supports the overall success of the Lifestyle team, which includes managing and top editing an assistant editor or staff writer level position. As needed, this editor will also be expected to write short- and long-lead lifestyle features across all lifestyle verticals as our traffic needs change.
The breakdown of the day-to-day responsibilities in this role will vary, but will include: ~30% assigning, editing, and routing SEO stories from pitch to publish across Lifestyle team; ~30% managing/top editing daily stories for trending Lifestyle news; ~20% assigning, editing, and routing Real Estate stories; ~10% brainstorming, assigning, editing/routing trend and feature stories across all Lifestyle verticals; and ~10% supporting special projects/tentpole programs as these opportunities come up.
Responsibilities:
Support the Real Estate and Living verticals’ traffic and post goals, working alongside the Executive Lifestyle Director and the Lifestyle team to identify trends, ideate new formats, and continue to grow overall Lifestyle traffic
Pitch, write, update, and/or edit ~6-8 stories per week within the Lifestyle team verticals, across new and existing content in the lifestyle space
Collaborate with the Executive Lifestyle Director and lifestyle editors on ways to grow the lifestyle verticals
Bring new voices and perspectives to Apartment Therapy that represent a range of lived experiences
Work on day-to-day content and larger projects to distill tips, hacks, service, and advice to our readers in approachable, optimized story formats
Manage and top edit an Assistant Editor or Staff Writer’s daily assignments as well as a team of freelance contributors to serve the overall needs of the section
Own the story pipeline, from pitch to publish, clearly setting, communicating, and delivering on deadlines and expectations
Work across departments (namely our SEO, Creative, Growth, and Edit Ops teams), to support our overall site and company growth goals
Attend in-person and online events on behalf of Apartment Therapy, as needed
Requirements:
3-5 years of digital experience writing and/or editing in the lifestyle space
Top-notch organizational, problem-solving, and time management skills
An eagerness to work across verticals and teams, and to take initiative as opportunities arise
Outstanding communication skills
Experience managing writers, with strong management skills and instincts
Recent, relevant experience working in the home, organizing, lifestyle, and real estate space, and a comfort producing this type of content
Ability to turn around clean copy on tight deadlines
Experience editing and assigning in a fast-paced ever-evolving editorial environment
Ability to manage relationships with freelancers and assign and edit article content in a fast-paced editorial environment
A strong, distinctive voice, with an ability to write for Apartment Therapy’s audience across platforms
An astute awareness of what makes a Lifestyle story interesting, with the ability to apply the Apartment Therapy lens to it
Experience using analytics tools such as Parse.ly and Google Analytics to inform strategy, as well as a willingness to learn more
Ability to balance multiple priorities and to quickly adjust strategy and execution in the face of new information
Salary Range: $75,000 - 80,000
The above represents the expected salary range for this role. Ultimately, compensation is determined by level of experience, location, and other job-related factors.
