The Bay Area News Group is looking for an ambitious, creative, thoughtful editor to lead a team of award-winning assignment editors and beat and general assignment reporters focused on making an impact in one of the country's most interesting regions. We cover it all, from Silicon Valley to Oakland, Walnut Creek and the Tri-Valley, as we explore the vibrant culture that defines the Bay Area, from its enviable restaurant scene to its artists, musicians and thought leaders for our digital sites, our front page, two popular weekly print sections and seven premium magazines.
Must be located in the South or East Bay Area and work at least three office days weekly in San Jose and/or Concord.
What you will do:
Manage journalists with a wide range of experience and talent to produce quick hits for our websites, centerpiece stories for the front page and Weekender and Eat Drink Play sections and expansive pieces for our magazines that delight readers with beautiful writing
Conceptualize, edit and oversee production for seven 72-page magazines per year while juggling deadlines for daily and weekly editions
Provide strong, thoughtful editing on deadline for a sophisticated print audience that appreciates excellent writing, balanced perspectives and a regional focus
Bring interest and experience in beats ranging from arts and entertainment topics to the Bay Area's restaurant scene
Collaborate with other news leaders across the newsroom and provide leadership across departments in pursuit of excellence
Use metrics to inform coverage and guide reporters and editors
What you will bring:
5+ years of experience as an editor
Excellent news judgment and a drive to compete under deadline pressure
Experience managing journalists and collaborating with photo, graphics and design teams
Strong organizational and planning skills
A university degree in journalism or a related field
In our diverse region, facility with a second language is a plus
Benefits and Compensation:
The salary range is $70,000 - $90,000. Pay is based on several factors including but not limited to geographic location, education, work experience, time in role, certifications, etc. In addition to your salary, the Company offers eligible employees a variety of benefits including medical, dental, life and disability insurance, 401k, as well as paid time off and select paid holidays (all benefits are based on eligibility).
