We are recruiting an assistant editor to join the television team at BBC Scotland news and current affairs. You will be working on the Reporting Scotland programmes on BBC One Scotland and the Nine and Seven programmes on the BBC Scotland channel. This is a permanent position.
Key Responsibilities And Accountabilities
As Assistant Editor, you will work with the Editor to lead the team which produces both Reporting Scotland and the Nine and Seven. You’ll work with, and lead, presenters, correspondents, reporters and other production staff to create TV journalism to the highest standard where we put the audience at the heart of everything we do. This will involve motivating and inspiring others to produce programmes to the highest editorial standards. You will also be one of the main output editors, shaping the content of the programmes, coming up with original stories and treatment ideas and interviewees. You will be proficient in our technical broadcast systems. You’ll work well under pressure and will be confident in a live news environment – especially the newsroom and the gallery.
We are always looking at ways to reach new audiences and to make as big an impact as possible with our journalism. You’d be expected to play an integral part in this. You will work closely with the TV Editor and will be required to deputise for her. You will also be expected to fulfil management and leadership duties including line managing members of the team and contributing to an inclusive and healthy working environment. As a member of the NCA leadership team, you’ll work across platforms with other assistant editors and editors to help manage and inspire everything we do and bring maximum benefit to all of our audiences. An ability to collaborate with colleagues on other platforms is essential with a particular emphasis on our digital content.
You will have strong editorial judgement and a thorough knowledge of the BBC’s Editorial Guidelines.
Knowledge, Skills, Training & Experience
We are looking for someone who has substantial experience working in television news at a high level and a track record of working in live news.
A considerable part of the role involves managing people and being a positive, pro-active and inclusive leader so the successful candidate must have experience in leading a team.
We are looking for someone with experience and evidence of original journalism.
Your ability to collaborate and work well in a team is of the utmost importance.
You’ll need to be robust to deal with the demands of daily news, and have a hard-wired journalistic rigour.
This role requires impeccable news judgement.
You will have the nerve and resilience to deliver under pressure and have excellent people and communication skills.
We will expect you to be committed to leading and encouraging others to bring great stories to air, operate to their best on a daily basis, and be motivated to aspire, continually, to a high standard.
You will have a good knowledge of, and interest in, Scottish life and politics and, of course, the wider world.
