This role sits within the news planning team. The team works with reporters and multi media journalists across the country to produce original and creative stories that reach audiences with impact and flare. The successful candidate will work closely with output producers to ensure the best stories are commissioned and produced to the highest of editorial standards for our digital, tv and radio platforms.

The team is also responsible for organising coverage of annual events such as The Royal Welsh Show and the National Eisteddfod, special themed output such as elections or pan BBC projects, and co-ordinating obits. The team puts diversity at the heart of our commissions and champions underserved audiences in the stories we tell.

The successful candidate will be expected to work on stories for English and Welsh output but this role is not Welsh essential.

Key Responsibilities And Accountabilities

You’ll be expected to build relationships with outlets across BBC Wales and understand the demands of digital, TV and radio services. You’ll ensure Planned stories are delivered as expected to output.

You’ll build good relationships with organisations and public figures and become a point of contact for BBC Wales. You’ll develop your own contacts which will allow you to fix guests and find case studies quickly and efficiently. You’ll be prepared to conduct interviews yourself with support from Senior Journalists if needed.

You’ll generate your own stories and work on them with the support of the wider team, and will understand the resources the newsroom has to support original journalism.

You will organise live broadcasts and produce in the field when required.

You will be expected to support young journalists and apprentices and will work with them to get their stories and ideas to air.

You will advocate the use of Wolftech and demonstrate best practice in organising and delivering stories to output.

You will be willing to receive training to learn about parts of the BBC Wales output that you may be unfamiliar with, in order to work across outlets successfully.

A good track record in finding contacts and case studies to create original content
An understanding of how stories can best reach digital, television and radio audiences
An enthusiasm for learning new skills and technology
A good understanding and knowledge of the political, cultural and geographical landscape of Wales
An understanding of basic audience insight tools to help identify stories/trends we should be covering
Passion for mentoring and supporting new staff and apprentices
