Job Introduction
We’re looking for a creative, energetic, and resourceful journalist to join the team. Working on The World Tonight is both demanding and satisfying and your work will be heard by 1.4 million listeners on BBC Radio 4 and on the organisation’s digital platforms. You will be dealing with breaking news, finding the best new takes on stories, producing news making interviews, briefing presenters, producing radio packages, casting discussions, working on outside broadcasts and preparing online material for our digital platforms.
The role offers an exciting opportunity for an experienced journalist with a passion for storytelling to work on one of the BBC’s most successful daily news programmes. The show is front and centre of the BBC’s coverage of international news, and we’re looking for people with a keen eye for a story who can help us inform, engage and surprise a new generation of audiences. You will also have the opportunity to work across the BBC’s two biggest speech-based radio networks: BBC Radio 4 and the World Service as the unit also produces BBC World Service’s flagship show Newshour and its sister programme, Weekend .
We’re looking for a first class journalist with a strong knowledge of both domestic and world politics and experience of working in a busy newsroom. You will be organised, resilient, hard-working, a team player and enthusiastic. A good knowledge of the digital landscape and how to make our content travel further on BBC platforms and beyond will be a real plus.
Main Responsibilities
Senior journalists on this team will work across our output, originating and delivering sequences that will help tell the big news stories of the day for our listeners.
As an output editor, you will chair daily meetings for the programme, come up with creative treatments, and lead the production team in finding the best guests to interview.
The programmes aim to take audiences to the heart of what’s happening, and you will combine persistence and sensitivity to reach people caught up in news events around the world, as well as delivering news-making interviews with relevant figures in positions of authority.
You will use analytical skills to research and fact-check statements by politicians to help presenters carry out effective interviews.
You will have an excellent knowledge of the BBC’s editorial guidelines and how they apply to live news programming.
You will also have a curious mind and be willing to search far and wide for stories and sounds that can surprise our listeners and make the programmes an unmissable listen.
Are you the right candidate?
Skills, Knowledge And Experience Required
Extensive experience as an journalist working on live output and breaking news. Appropriate production experience and excellent editorial judgement
A track record of delivering original journalism and news-making interviews
Sound knowledge of international news and current affairs, and a good understanding of the needs of the BBC’s global audiences
An excellent understanding of UK politics and national news in Britain, and the ability to shape the news agenda on a national news programme for Radio 4 audiences
The ability to work well and calmly in a live 24 hour newsroom environment; able to handle a rapidly changing running order, and have the temperament to enjoy the process
Proven ability to concentrate on several areas of work at one time, prioritising and delivering consistently to deadlines
Proven ability to deal with editorial challenging stories and navigate editorial compliance with the BBC’s guidelines
An ability to convert radio sequences into eye-catching digital content that can be used by the digital newsroom and across the BBC’s social platforms.
These roles operate on a seven-day rota based in New Broadcasting House which may include weekend working in the wider unit.
