BBC Channel Islands is looking for a Senior Journalist to produce our TV output and also work as a cross-platform reporter. We produce TV news bulletins covering all of the Channel Islands from our Jersey studio. We are a sub-opt of the regional TV news programme BBC Spotlight, which has its main studios in Plymouth.

On other days the job involves reporting for Online, TV and radio. This job would be ideal if you are keen on developing as an output producer and as a multi-media reporter. You’ll learn the skills needed to work with editorial and operational teams focused on that day’s output.

Key Responsibilities And Accountabilities

Working with the Local Story Teams in Jersey and Guernsey, you’ll produce the 1830 opt. You’ll be part of a small team of editorial and operational staff which covers the patch with a mixture of lives, VTs and studio two-ways. You’ll need a good sense of what makes a story and how you want to tell it. You should be able to work with News Editors and reporters to provide the best coverage. Developing a good working relationship with teams in Guernsey and Plymouth is also important.

When reporting, you’ll be working across Online, TV and radio. Sometimes you’ll provide for all three, on others you’ll work with colleagues to bring the story to a platform. Experience of production and reporting for Online, TV and Radio would be an advantage. Camera and editing skills would also be useful but we can provide training.

Knowledge, Skills, Training & Experience

You must have really strong editorial judgement and be able to take sensitive decisions quickly and decisively. You should have and a good command of the BBC's policies in all relevant areas. You need an excellent working knowledge of media law. You will already have a good base of experience in journalism and some exposure to TV production and/or reporting would be helpful. You will be able to make decisions with authority and under pressure and will have excellent negotiation, communication and interpersonal skills.
