Job Introduction
We are looking for a Senior Digital Journalist to join the BBC’s Asia digital team. You will be responsible for writing, editing, subbing and commissioning news, analysis and features from Asia - both South Asia and Asia-Pacific - for the BBC news website. You will also be in charge of curating a specialised front page for audiences in Asia.
The role involves working closely with digital teams from London and Singapore, as well as television, radio and languages teams across the region. You will also be expected to help with coverage on big global stories.
Job Responsibilities
You will decide the news agenda for the day, making data and audience-driven decisions about which stories to cover, how to follow up on them, and which formats would work best for a digital audience
You will run breaking news for the BBC’s Asia desk - editing live pages, big news stories, and snap analysis. Often, you will also be required to help oversee live and breaking coverage from other parts of the world, as part of the BBC’s 24x7 news operation
You will edit and sub news stories and features as per BBC style with a focus on news requirements, and the needs of digital audiences - eg snappy headlines, best SEO practices etc
You will curate the BBC’s front page for Asia audiences with a mix of globally and regionally significant stories
You will commission and plan a wide range of coverage - from daily news to longer-term stories. And to do this, you will work with both reporters on the desk, as well as those across Asia
You will pitch original and ambitious ideas on how to cover the big news themes in Asia
Are you the Right Candidate?
You should be able to demonstrate:
Strong editorial judgment with demonstrable experience in editing breaking news in text on digital platforms
The ability to swiftly write and sub engaging news copy, with attention to accuracy, context and tone
Experience in making decisions under pressure while quickly rolling out a coverage plan in response to big and breaking news
Experience using social media, search and audience data to improve digital storytelling, reach new audiences and broaden coverage
A track record of covering the Asian and international news agenda for digital audiences with insightful, rigorous and high-quality journalism
Experience with and understanding of the formats, tools and techniques to run rolling digital news coverage in both text and video
Curiosity and a nuanced understanding of South Asia, South-East Asia or East Asia - we don’t expect you to be equally familiar with all of these regions, but a grip on any one, and a keenness to learn about the others, will be welcome
