Job Introduction
We are looking for a talented senior journalist to become a key part of our output team on the BBC Sport website and app.
Senior journalists are vital to our content. They work in a variety of roles, from curating our front page, to subbing and publishing content, to running our newsdesk and supervising our hugely popular live text coverage.
In this role you will need to have excellent editorial judgement, be adaptable, a leader and passionate about driving our output behind the scenes. If this sounds like you, we’d love you to apply.
We want BBC Sport’s output to reflect and understand the audiences we serve - for example, the different geographical regions of the UK and the experience of people from underrepresented groups. We would therefore encourage applications from individuals with skills or experience that can help contribute towards ensuring we maximise the diversity of our coverage and content.
Main Responsibilities
Senior journalists are expected to do the following:
Make editorial decisions quickly and confidently with the ability to respond calmly and positively to changing events and circumstances
Commissioning news stories and features to engage audiences.
Sub content and manage indexes
Ensure published content is of the highest journalistic standards; it is accurate, fair and impartial and adheres to the BBC’s editorial guidelines
Use data analytics to ensure the website showcases in the best way possible.
Take control of the BBC Sport homepage across all digital platforms, using editorial judgement and flair
Provide structured feedback and act as a line manager when required
Work variable shift patterns and weekends
Are you the right candidate?
We require an experienced senior journalist, particularly those who have worked in online written media.
Proven editorial judgement and flair in a newsroom - where pictures, graphics, social media, video and stats are just as important as the written word - should be married with considerable experience in journalism.
A consistency of approach, thorough knowledge of platforms and understanding of on-demand media is vital, as well as being able to work under pressure.
BBC Sport online has a global audience of around 27m browsers a week and you will make key decisions for them. Therefore, this is not an entry-level role so you must be able to demonstrate experiences of many of the duties listed in the role responsibility section.
As you will be expected to make decisions and judgements on content ideas for sport, a strong editorial sporting knowledge is essential.
