BBC World Service is an international multimedia broadcaster, part of BBC News, delivering a wide range of language and regional services and working increasingly with other parts of BBC News to serve global audiences. It uses multiple platforms to reach its weekly audience of 320 million globally, including TV, digital platforms including social media, AM, FM, shortwave, digital satellite and cable channels.


The BBC Chinese Service is located in Hong Kong and in Taipei. The Service has a digital first strategy and publishes content online, on social media platforms in simplified and traditional Chinese. The service aims to produce world-class digital content relevant to an increasingly social, tech-savvy and global-trotting Chinese audience, and to make sense of news and events in the Greater China area and in the world for our audience.


The post will be based in the BBC’s Hong Kong office, reporting to the News Editor in Hong Kong, working closely with the team in Taipei to deliver the best service for BBC audiences.


Applicants for the video journalist positions must have first-hand experience of working in broadcast media in Chinese. They must also possess excellent written and spoken language skills of both Chinese and English.

You will understand the language of digital newsgathering and be able to produce, shoot and edit material, delivering highly shareable and engaging content. You will have strong technical skills, in filming and editing, combined with an editorial background. You will be happy working on your own projects as well as with others in the teams.


Main Responsibilities

You'll work under supervision of desk editors and the service editor to ensure content is published on time to the highest editorial and technical standards and shared as appropriate across the wider BBC. With a track record of news and current affairs video production, you will be responsible for location lighting, filming, editing, post production and product delivery. You will assist in video recording for the Hong Kong office and help with the Taipei team’s production of video content as requested. The job requires making strong and creative journalism for a digital audience and a knowledge of relevant journalism law.

MAIN DUTIES

Edit and produce engaging video content for multiple outlets and digital platforms in Chinese language.
Ensure content is accurate and informative whilst striving for creative and imaginative output.
Reversion content for different services and different digital platforms.
Record video interviews and other types of original contents as required.
Originate and organise ideas for video production projects, from filming to processing of material for BBC Chinese Service.
Ensure the best standards of video production are set and adhered to cross the BBC Chinese service.
Observe and carry out any requirement outlined in BBC News Safety Policy and specifically to conduct risk assessments wherever appropriate.
Use social media and other new platforms for promoting video content in Chinese and other relevant languages.
Understand the editorial need, technical requirements and workflow across BBC World Service and BBC News.
Monitor the use and inspire the growth of BBC Chinese website, constantly identifying areas for development.
All producers may be required to travel off base on short reporting trips and assignments and to spend longer periods of time on story deployments.

Are you the right candidate?

A full command and up to date knowledge of written and spoken Chinese as first (or equivalent) language and very good English.
Experience of digital newsgathering, using various cameras and filing video from the field. A knowledge of outside broadcast techniques would be an advantage.
A good presence on camera and experience of Facebook/YouTube lives would be an advantage.
Experience of producing and editing high quality video content on a regular basis.
Ability to quickly adapt to new and changing technologies.
Ability to encourage, guide and assist colleagues who are new and unfamiliar with video and digital.
Ability to confidently use Final Cut Pro, Adobe Photoshop, Adobe After Effects, SocialFlow, Canva and other tools and applications as required.
Broad understanding of current technical issues involved in production of video content and a demonstrable interest in new media technologies.
Good keyboard/computer skills and the ability to acquire technical skills and to operate technical equipment.
Proven ability to originate, plan, develop and organise story ideas.
Good understanding of impartiality and journalistic values, and the ability to produce content for diverse and underserved audiences.
High level of interpersonal skills including the abiility to communicate stories to other teams.
Capacity to translate complex ideas into engaging broadcast material.
Understanding of BBC News safety and risk procedures and guidelines.
